All Things New: Our New Residence

This message: Our New Residence

Those who travel the world have seen some of the most attractive places on Planet Earth. Dr. David Jeremiah is one of those travelers. In one of his messages, he wrote,

Donna and I took a little break, as you know. We saw Istanbul and then we spent a day at the ruins in Ephesus and we saw the Acropolis in Athens. But my favorite place on the whole journey was a place called Santorini. Some of you have been there. It’s built up on a cliff, literally, it’s built on the top of a volcanic ruin. And there is nothing on the side of the cliff from way up to the top of it all the way to the ground. But on the top, on the top of this ruin, is a city, and all of the houses are white. And it is the most gorgeous place you’ve ever seen in your life.

It’s all of the quaintness of Europe and all of the beauty that you’ve imagined it could be, all the little winding streets and shops until you cannot imagine, so many shops. But the thing that is so glorious about it is the approach to it. Coming on a sail ship toward Santorini and all of a sudden, looking up and there, elevated way above the sea, is this white city, almost as if it is suspended in space. And all week long, I’m thinking about the holy city in God’s heaven and I’m thinking, “Wow, what a beautiful place”. And it doesn’t even hold a candle to what God has envisioned for those of us who put our trust in him. Santorini is child’s play compared to the holy city.

As part of our Communion reflection series called “All Things New,” let us look one of those things that God, in Revelation chapter, promised to make new: our new residence. Do you have a dream home? Do you want a dream home? Whether you get your dream home in this life or not, the Bible assures us that every born-again Christian child of God has a dream home. Let’s answer some basic questions about our dream home, which is in the new residence God has waiting for us.

  1. Who is the engineer and builder of our new residence?
  • John 14:2-3 “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
  • Hebrews 11:10“for he (Abraham) waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
  • Hebrews 11:16 “But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.”

  1. Where is our new residence located?
  • The “Heaven of heavens”, the “third Heaven”, which is God’s home country, known as Paradise. (See 2 Chronicles 2:6; 6:18; Nehemiah 9:6; Psalms 68:33; 2 Corinthians 12:2.)

  1. What is the social quality of our new residence?
  • It is a country, a homeland, and a city, conducive to the highest quality of life and relationships.

  • Hebrews 11:9, 14-15“By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. 14  For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15  And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.”

  • Hebrews 13:14 “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.”

  1. What is the name of the city?
  • Galatians 4:26 “…the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.”
  • Hebrews 12:22 “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels.”

  • Revelation 3:12 “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God…”

  • Revelation 21:2 “Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

  • The country is Heaven. The city is New Jerusalem, the capital city of Heaven and the headquarters of the Kingdom of God/Heaven.

  1. How does the Bible describe the city?
  • The city is beyond human imagination!
    • 1 Corinthians 2:9-10 “But as it is written: ‘EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.’ 10  But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

  • The appearance of the city is elegant as a bride on wedding day.
    • Revelation 21:2,10-11 “Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11  having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.”

  • The layout and size of the city can absorb all of God’s children.
    • Revelation 21:16 “The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal.”

  • A measurement of 1,200 furlongs is 1,500 miles for all four sizes of the city; each side side is 375 miles long.

  • Let me quote Dr. David Jeremiah’s notes again:

F.W. Boreham was a brilliant and popular essayist and preacher who gave careful consideration to the size and capacity of the new city. In one of his writings he tells the story of an Australian engineer by the name of Tamus who was one of his parishioners and he was talking with this engineer about the new city…

‘Did you ever think,’ he said, ‘about the size of the city God has prepared?’ And without waiting for a reply, he proceeded to reveal the significance of his statistics. ‘Man, it’s amazing,’ he said, ‘it’s astounding. It beats everything I’ve ever heard of. John says that each of the walls of the city measure 12,000 furlongs. Now, if you work that out,’ and he bent over his notebook, ‘it will give you an idea that each one of the walls and the cube of it, they’re all 1400 miles. Between 1400 and 1500 miles. And the ground floor square mile is 2,250,000 square miles on the first level. Did you ever hear like that? London covers an area of 140 square miles. The city foursquare is 2,250,000 square miles on the first floor. This city is 20 times as big as all of New Zealand. It’s ten times as big as Germany. It’s ten times as big as France. It’s 40 times as big as all of England. It is ever so much bigger than India. Why, it’s an enormous continent all by itself. I had no idea of it,’ he said, ‘until I went with the figures.’ He would allow no comment at this stage. ‘Wait a minute,’ he pleaded, ‘I’ve been going into the matter of population. And it’s even more wonderful still. Look at this. Working it out on the basis of the number of people to the square mile in the city of London, the population of the city foursquare comes out at 100,000 million, 70 times the present population of the entire globe.’

  • The wall of the city is sky-high!
    • Revelation 21:17-18 “Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18  The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.”

  • The wall is 144 cubits tall; one cubit is about 1.5 feet; so, the wall of the city is 216 miles tall!

  • The city has 12 pearly gates of pearls.
    • Revelation 21:12-13 “Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13  three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.”

  • The city has 12 foundations of precious stones.
    • Revelation 21:14,19-20 “Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20  the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.”

  • The foundations reflect every color of the rainbow. From the distance, the city looks like it sits on a rainbow!

  • The streets of the city are made of reflective gold.
    • Revelation 21:21 “The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”
    • The word “transparent” should be “translucent.”

  • The population and condition of the city are holy, honorable, and glorious.
    • Revelation 21:3 “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.”

  • Revelation 21:7-8 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. 8  But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

  • Revelation 21:24-27 “And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25  Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). 26  And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27  But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
